Reddit Sentiment & Mental Health Language Analysis

Exploring language patterns through NLP

Project overview

Project context & objective

This independent project examined language patterns in Reddit discussions through natural language processing, feature preparation and machine-learning classification, with visual outputs designed to communicate the analysis.

Unstructured discussion text is difficult to categorise consistently. This project explored extracting and interpreting language signals from Reddit text.

Unlike spreadsheet records, online discussion text is unstructured and context-sensitive. Slang, ambiguity, changing terminology and incomplete context make sentiment or topic classification difficult to interpret reliably. Mental-health-related text adds additional ethical considerations.

Methodology

From inputs to insights

The following stages explain the workflow and the technical decisions behind this project.

01

Text preprocessing

Python and NLTK were used for natural-language-processing tasks to prepare Reddit text for structured analysis.

02

Feature engineering

The project explored turning written language into analysable features for classification. Text processing helps bridge unstructured content and statistical methods.

03

Classification exploration

scikit-learn was used to explore classification approaches. Model outputs represent classifications of language patterns, not assessments of individuals.

04

Visualising patterns

Tableau was used to present patterns and findings while recognising the interpretive limitations of social-media text.

Deliverables

Project outputs & learning

An exploratory text-analysis and classification workflow with Tableau-based presentation of patterns.

What I learned

Classification outputs need careful interpretation, especially for sensitive topics such as mental-health language.

Key deliverables

Transferable skills

Skills & practical relevance

Handling unstructured information, documenting processing stages and considering the limitations of analytical outputs.

Scope & supporting evidence

This is an independent exploratory project, not a clinical assessment tool. Dataset details, model-performance metrics and evidence of real-world deployment have not been provided.
